Buried jewels
in the darkest dirt

I was pushing a grocery cart down 14th street at midnight. collecting sweet treats and preparing to go on a trip. I went to a cafe for donuts and ice cream and ended up with coffee. At the cafe I see Ernst. I try to not see him but we meet eyes and he’s super warm and nice. He tells me I look better than I did the last time he saw me. I am a woman now, no longer the 18 year old college girl he met in 2016. In my grocery cart I have lots of goodies. Lemon is the main ingredient.

At a dinner table with all white women. Older white women. I was reading an article and they kept starting side conversations. I told them loudly I’m not repeating myself and they loved it. It sorta felt like the world was gonna end or was already ending but not in that room. A nerdy little white guy sat next to me clearly wanting to progress our relationship but didn’t have the money to give me what I wanted. He was a bum, but I liked him. I wasn’t going to give him more than he could afford. On a separate couch there was a bald black man. Discreetly, he told me he desired my hands rubbed across his face with force and care. I was nervous to do it  in front of everyone but did so anyway. An inner monologue began. Some women are wild and some are just scared.
